Google Fiber Begins to Build Major Network in San Antonio

By  |

While Google Fiber construction has been quietly underway for some time, officials say that network production will be ramped up over the next few months.

Clarissa Ramon, the Community Impact manager for Google Fiber, told the San Antonio Express-News that the team has begun to “ramp up our Google construction efforts in San Antonio.” Because San Antonio was chosen as one of just a few cities to receive Google Fiber all over the city, fiber cables will need to be inlaid into the current system.

The network highlights super high-speed internet through a “fiber-optic network that promises gigabit speeds, about 100 times faster than basic broadband service.” The network will revolutionize internet all over the city, but it will come at a cost.

Construction crews will begin digging to insert fiber cables around San Antonio and also begin the process of stringing them from poles, too. Residents are warned that they may soon see work crews in their neighborhoods, “tearing up streets and hanging lines on thousands of utility poles in the area” in order to get the network in place.
