The Way This Houston Midwife Got to the Hospital During the Floods Was Awesome

By  |

Cathy Allen Rude, a Houston midwife, had a client’s water break during the crazy flooding and got there as quickly as she could: an inflatable pool toy.

When Cathy heard that her beloved patient went into labor and was dangerously close to giving birth, this Houston midwife knew she had to get to the Katy Birth Center as quickly as possible. However, her street was flooded so she did the next best thing.

Climbing atop a borrowed inflatable swan pool float, as reported by the Wichita Eagle, she was able to haul her items and herself to the end of her street where a truck was waiting to take her to her struggling patient.

The mom in labor was planning on having a friend give Rude a kayak lift to the birthing center, but instead a friendly neighbor offered up the inflatable swan, which has become popular over the past few summer seasons.

Rude helped birth a very healthy baby boy that weighed nine pounds and 12 ounces, giving a happy ending to this Houston flood story.

She opened the Katy Birth Center in 2010 after earning her professional midwife certificate and is no doubt the most reliable and devoted midwife in the area.
