Grandfather Escorts His Terminally Ill Granddaughter to Prom in Heartbreaking Story

Because she has Batten Disease, Lydia may not be able to attend prom when the time comes, so her grandfather stepped forward to change that.

Lydia Wahlstrom, at only 11 years old, suffers from Batten Disease which causes vision problems and seizures. The degenerative disease is also fatal. As The Huffington Post reported, her mother Laura has been Lydia’s rock through her diagnosis and because of that, took to Facebook to tell the world about what Lydia experienced.

Their small town of Fosston, Minnesota heard about Lydia’s condition and immediately made room for her at the prom since she may not be able to attend it herself when she is old enough. Her grandfather, Paul Magelssen, stepped forward to invite his sweet granddaughter to prom using an invitation in Braille.

The entire community rallied around Lydia to give her the fairytale experience that every young girl dreams about, from buying the dress she coveted to her hairstyle, which was an updo with a tiara.

Lydia shared a dance with her grandfather during the prom, and in his words, he relayed his experience: “I just said to her you are doing a great job, you are beautiful, I love you, I love you, over and over and over again.”

This is certainly a night that no one will ever forget, and it’s so beautiful to hear that Lydia got to experience a breathtaking prom regardless of her disease.
