November is a month with tons of events, causes, and happenings. Along with the opening of the fall deer hunting season (which is virtually a holiday in Texas), Thanksgiving, the start of the holiday season, November is also Prematurity Awareness Month and Adoption Awareness Month. With this time with family and stuffing your face right around the corner, November is also National Diabetes Awareness Month.
To spread awareness and encourage healthy eating and lifestyle habits, Wallet Hub conducted a study in conjunction with National Diabetes Awareness Month. In the study, all 50 states were compared across a variety of measure to determine each state’s rank. You can look at the full study here.

Overall, Texas ranks 9th as the worst state in “Obesity and Overweight Prevalence” and 10th worst in “Food and Fitness.” The latter category was measured according to how many citizens in urban areas lived more than a mile from a grocery store or supermarket, the number of fast food restaurants per capita and the number of fitness centers per capita.
To further aid in interpreting the ranks a 1 is equal to the worst, a 25 is average and a 50 is the highest health rating.
Some other stats from the study are as follows:
- Texas is ranked 7th in the percentage of residents who are physically inactive.
- 9th in the percentage of children who are overweight.
- 13th in the percentage of residents with diabetes
- 18th in the percentage of adults who are overweight
- 19th in the percentage of adults with high cholesterol
- 19th in the percentage of residents who eat less than one serving of fruits or vegetables a day.

Overall, Utah and Colorado ranked as the healthiest states based upon the metrics of the study, with California, Vermont and Montana coming in close behind. The states that ranked the lowest were Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Kentucky.
