100s of Turkeys Take Over California Town
While Texans may be concerned about wild boars, residents of Davis, California are worried about a turkey takeover. The city of Davis has about 100 wild turkeys roaming around in groups.
ABC 13 reported that news station KTXL-TV covered several 911 calls made to local police. One caller confessed, “This is a little embarrassing. I am trying to get into my office on G Street and I have this huge turkey surrounding my car, circling me, and I don’t know what to do.” Another was concerned about “a turkey between 4th and F and then 5th and F that’s running around chasing after people.”
While it may be easy to chuckle at these distressed callers, to their credit, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology calls wild turkeys “one of our largest and heaviest birds” with a wingspan around 50″.

As the Washington Star News reports, the city recently passed an ordinance to start euthanizing some of the creatures. Perhaps what drove officials over the edge was one particular bird who locals call “Downtown Tom.” He’s known as the fiercest and most aggressive turkey of them all.
Wildlife officials told residents to clap at the birds, shout and use something to block their body if a wild turkey starts coming after them.
