Woman Discovers that Her Uber Driver Was the Voice of AOL
On November 5th, Brandee Barker posted a video to her Twitter account. She knew she had to share her exciting run-in with an unlikely celebrity. Barker was getting a ride from an Uber driver who was none other than the voice of AOL, Elwood Edwards.
Whenever users signed on to AOL they heard a friendly voice exclaim, “Welcome. You’ve got mail!” It remains instantly recognizable to anyone who used the program. Barker couldn’t help but ask Edwards to repeat his classic phrase. He did so with a smile on his face, amused with her enthusiasm.
CNN reports that Edwards was only paid $200 for his famous recording which also included the phrases “file’s done” and “goodbye.” His wife worked at Quantum Computer Services, the company that became AOL, and she recommended him for the job.
Barker’s tweet has spread across the internet, and people are replying to say how thrilled they are to actually see the man behind the voice. It’s already been retweeted over 6.8K times. Edwards still does voiceover work, and Barker told CNN that he’s a great Uber driver too.
