50 Children Adopted in Harris County in Time for Thanksgiving

Nearly 50 children in Harris County have finally found homes due to a tradition that has gone on for 15 years. The mass adoption event takes place around National Adoption Day, which is right in time for families to spend Thanksgiving together as a cohesive unit. On this incredible day, family court is much more celebratory that heartbreaking as children from ages 14 months to 16-years-old are adopted.

Video footage of some of the adoptions taking place on KHOU.com shows how excited parents are to gain a new member of their family. With tears in their eyes, they get to hug their newly adopted child who even gets a sweet little owl plush to hold on to and remember the special day.

Donett Walker adopted her son’s children who were put into the system. She told KHOU, “There are so many kids who just need someone to be their advocate. To be the person who looks out for their best interest and thankfully, we were able to keep it in our family.”

Chron.com says that 1,265 children in Harris County still need to be adopted, and that number reaches nearly nearly 6,400 when looking at all of Texas. Big events like National Adoption Day are needed to raise awareness and positivity surrounding the process.
