Infant Passes Away After Family Dog Attack in San Marcos

By  |

A San Marcos family is enduring a devastating ordeal. On Tuesday, a two month old baby girl was bit and killed by the family dog while she was napping in her bouncy seat. KEYE TV quoted San Marcos Police Commander Kelley Earnest who explained that the girl’s father had fallen asleep nearby on the couch. “As you can imagine — a new parent — fatigued … very tired, and so he felt like when the child went to sleep … ‘here’s my opportunity to catch a little nap,’ so he fell asleep and then awoke to the child injured,” she said.

Fox 7 reports that the dog was an 8-year-old German Shepard that the family had raised since it was a puppy. The family says the dog had not shown previous signs of aggression, and when animal control approached it, the animal was calm and submissive.

Police Commander Earnest said the a press conference that her heart goes out to the family that has suffered two unimaginable losses – their child and their pet. (Though the fate of the dog isn’t known for sure at this point. It will stay with animal control for the next week before a decision is made.) At this time, no charges have been filed against the parents as a result of the alleged accident.
