In 1908, Anna Jarvis first organized a “Mother’s Work Day.” She’d been a champion for health issues and thought mothers were the best group to expand the need for health awareness. At one of her first events, she handed out white carnations. Woodrow Wilson signed the proclamation to declare Mother’s Day an official national holiday in 1914. Several years later, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution that government officials wear white carnations. White seemed to symbolize purity. Later, the tradition of wearing a white carnation for a deceased mom and a pink one for a living one became popular. Anna Jarvis resented the commercialism of the day and many think she regretted bringing the day to the attention of the public.
