This Texas High School Requires a Breathalyzer Test to Enter Prom

Prosper High School, a 5A school north of Frisco, is instating a new rule for this year’s prom. Prosper ISD recently emailed parents to let them know their child must take a breathalyzer test in order to enter their upcoming prom.

Fox 4 News says that Prosper ISD police officers will take the time to test each student for alcohol consumption before they’re allowed to go inside. If they fail the breathalyzer test, their parents will be called, and they’ll face disciplinary action on the following Monday.

NBC DFW points out that a nearby school district, Argyle ISD, has been testing teens before entering their prom and upon their exit since 2012. They say they haven’t caught anyone since they’ve started the testing.

Parent Justin Smith told Fox 4, “I think it’s a good idea. I think they shouldn’t have any children here that are under the influence and have a chance to mess anything up for the kids who are following the rules.” But not everyone agrees. Another parent told Fox they feel that the district is going too far and is using the testing as an “intimidation tactic.” The district maintains that it’s a preventative action and not reactionary of a particular event.

The prom takes place this weekend at Southfork Ranch.
