Several Texas Pups Are Up For America’s Top Dog Awards
The second round of voting for the top dogs in seven categories (law enforcement/arson, guide/hearing, therapy, service, search and rescue, military and emerging hero) is open until June 28th on the American Humane Hero Dog Awards website. Finalists will appear on the Hallmark Channel during a special gala centered around the heroic pups and their incredible stories. Additionally, the “American Humane will donate $2,500 to each of the eight finalist’s charity partners, and the American Hero Dog will win an additional $5,000 for their charity partner!”
Chron.com took special notice of two Texas dogs out of the current 21 semi-finalists. Suma L469 served America for nine years, five of which were spent hunting explosives in Afghanistan. On the Hero Dog Awards website, Suma “says,” “My last four years I spent at Lackland Air Force Base training the younger dogs for their careers in the military. I served my country and I only asked to be showed love and kindness.”
Another Texan, Luca, is an older search and rescue dog that came out of retirement last year to find a Fort Worth man who was stuck in waist-deep mud. He would have passed away if he were not found by Luca.
