In a national initiative to unite civic organizations and nonprofits with those looking to address racism, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation announced on Wednesday, June 28 that the Communities Foundation of Texas will receive a grant for $1.75 million to support racial healing projects in Dallas. The only city from the Lone Star State to be selected, Dallas was chosen as part of the 14 Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation grants which, over the coming two to five-year period, will total close to $24 million.

In a written statement, Executive Artistic Director Cara Mía Theatre and David Lozano, co-chairman of the Dallas initiative, said, “Historically, race has affected the quality of living in Dallas for everyone. In terms of housing, education, health, business development, arts and culture, racial divisions have created barriers for many and privileges for others.” Addressing segregation, studying how race is discussed in the media, speaking to concentrated poverty and economic inequality, and examining laws which are discriminatory, the grant will assist the Communities Foundation of Texas to implement a concerted effort in breaking down social and economic barriers with respect to race and culture.
