Texas’ “campus carry” law will soon be expanding to include community colleges throughout the Lone Star State. Commencing on Tuesday, August 1, those with a license to carry a handgun will now be allowed to carry it on campus, with minor restrictions.
The law, which allows for the carry of concealed firearms, goes into effect following many hours of work and preparation by schools, students, faculty, and additional staff members across the state for the purpose of ensuring effective school protocols are in place. Restrictions for this law include child-care centers and performance halls.

In a report by NBC DFW, it was noted that some schools have posted signage which designates firearm-free zones. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram made reference to Tarrant County College specifically, in this respect. Reginald Gates, the spokesman for the school, told the Star-Telegram that rifles are still banned from school property, and noted that open carry of a firearm is also not allowed.

In 2015, the Texas State Legislature adopted a law permitting concealed firearms at public colleges across the state, however, community colleges were given an additional year to coordinate and prepare for the change. Under this law, private colleges across Texas were given the opportunity to opt out, and it’s been reported that almost all of them did.
