Deer Park (southeast Houston area) resident Betty Walter adores dogs. She has four of her own, and she’s taken on many rescues, including ones in her neighborhood that were left behind when people evacuated. In total, she had 21 dogs to take care of when Harvey hit home. Suddenly, she was in four feet of water inside of her house without any assistance. Click2Houston.com writes, “Walter said she spent at least 14 hours in her attic with all of the dogs, waiting for some kind of help.”

But, the good Samaritans of Deer Park were out looking for those who needed a hand. A few men walking through the water with a boat located Walter and put the tiny ship to good use. They loaded up all 21 dogs, who appeared confused, but also like they were ready to go with the flow. “We had 21 dogs on this boat. No place for any humans on this boat. We had to walk in water over my head to get out,” Walter wrote on Facebook. Everyone safely made it to higher ground.

When KPRC posted the story on Facebook, the news resonated with many readers. Erika Lopez wrote, “She is my old general manager and a has a huge heart. She loves animals and would do anything to help them. Not only that, she would often help homeless people in the area by giving items and offering a place to stay. She is not a dog hoarder. I’m glad her and the dogs made it out safe.” Walter is accepting donations here.
