Man Shows How Tough It Is to Do the ‘Navy Seal Water Challenge’

In a new video from BuzzFeedBlue that already has 3.8 million views and over 3,000 comments, an athletic young man is challenged to take part in drills that Navy Seals must be able to complete. They’re part of the “drown-proofing test.” The drills involve making oneself sink and jumping back up once you reach the bottom, floating for five minutes, dolphin swimming back and forth across a lengthy pool, completing a frontward and backward summersault, and retrieving something from the bottom of the pool. Oh, and all of these tasks must be completed without the use of hands and feet.

In a video posted by The Washington Post, a Navy Seal in training said that he feels that drown-proofing is more mentally challenging than physical. “It’s all about trying to stay comfortable and stay calm in the water,” he said. “Half our class failed it the first time we went through. I think they have a mental block about the idea of not having control.”

Of course, no one should attempt any of the drown-proofing drills without careful supervision. It’s certainly not something that should be tried out at home or at a neighborhood pool. For the sake of the video, Buzzfeed had Joshua attempt the skills in a regular pool with safety nearby. Even so, he became rather frazzled during some of the drills that understandably would make a person uncomfortable. Watch how he did below.
