Houston to Join in Professional Video Game Franchise

By  |

ABC 13 reports that Houston will soon have its own Overwatch League franchise thanks to a partnership between video game company Blizzard and Texas Rangers co-owner Neil Liebman.

Admittedly, this is very confusing news if you’re unfamiliar with the video game world, but video game tournaments do exist, and there’s a large audience for them. Overwatch, as explained in the video below by Curse Entertainment, is a very successful first-person shooter, multi-player game where players choose their character’s role and work together to complete otherworldly objectives. The game was released in May 2016 and has already racked up over $1 billion in sales.

At this time, details are unclear as to who the professional video game players will be, where they’ll play, or even the name of the team. But with the $20 million deal, Houston joins other major cities such as “…Austin-Dallas, Philadelphia, London, New York, Boston, Los Angeles, Miami-Orlando, Seoul, Shanghai and San Francisco,” according to the news.

ESports Betting Report explains things further, quoting the league by saying, “Overwatch League matches will be held in one of the full-service studios with seating for more than 450 people and multiple spectator boxes for special guests. The facility includes convenient practice areas, where teams can warm up before their matches, as well as player lounges and offices.”
