Little Girl Creates a Sonata From a Random Drawing of Four Notes
Imagine being able to hear a piano sonata in your head, and then being able to instantly play it as the music pours from your fingers. Now, imagine that you’re able to do this at only 12 years old! Alma Deutscher is a musical prodigy. On her website, it’s explained that Deutscher “…is a composer, violinist and pianist. She started playing the piano when she was two years old and the violin when she was three. Soon afterward she started improvising simple melodies on the piano. Her attempts at composition started aged four, when she began writing an opera about a pirate called Don Alonzo.”
Recently, the young genius became the subject of a BBC documentary and a segment on “60 Minutes.” The video, which is available on the official “60 Minutes” YouTube page, has already been viewed over 1.4 million times since its publication near the beginning of the month. In the segment, Deutscher is given four random music notes pulled out of a hat to compose a sonata on the piano. Watching her work is fascinating, and she’s clearly thrilled to share her talent with others.
It may be hard to not compare yourself at her age, but don’t beat yourself up. “When I was her age I almost used a butter knife to get my toast out of the toaster,” Emily Davis wrote in the YouTube comments.
