Once Ice Took Over the Southwest Freeway, Houstonians Turned Around and Drove Off the On-Ramp
No one wants to deal with a gridlock of traffic, especially Houstonians. During the winter storm, drivers attempted to journey down the Southwest Freeway, but as ABC 13 says, it was too much too soon. The roads hadn’t properly defrosted yet, so police shut down areas of the highway. Of course, this caused a major back up on the cold and gray day. Instead of waiting it out, many cars decided that enough was enough, and they turned around on the freeway and went out the on-ramp!
Video of the event will have you watching through your fingers with your palm covering your face. The nail-biting ordeal ended after 11 a.m. when “ City of Houston Mobility Response Team members arrived on the scene.” But there were already plenty of drivers who had made up their own rules of the road.

The dangerously creative move made by many Houstonians reached news stations across the state, and also made it all the way up to the Boston area.
If you’re wondering how the rest of the city’s roads faired in the freezing temps, KXAN wrote on Wednesday, “According to the Houston Police Department, since midnight Tuesday, the department has responded to 977 crashes.”
