Watch Texas Native Mean Joe Greene in This Classic Coke Ad

With the Super Bowl right around the corner, we like to take time to reflect on some of the finer moments in NFL commercials — this one featuring one of the Texas Hill Country’s own, “Mean” Joe Greene.

The Temple, Texas native was front and center in Coca-Cola’s famous 1979 ad, created by the McCann-Erickson Worldwide agency in New York.

As he steps off the field, grunting and apparently injured, a child approaches him and says, “I just want you to know, I think you’re the best.”

The kid offers Mean Joe a coke, and as soon as the former Steeler puts it to his lips you can cue up the disco: “Coke and a smile! Makes me feel good.” And, after the elixir apparently brightens the battered defensive tackle, he tosses his game jersey to the little fan.

You might guess the excitement in the kid’s face when that happens.
