How to Can Salsa in a Few Easy Steps

By  |

While some families pass down the knowledge of how to can salsa from generation to generation, others aren’t so lucky. If you want to know how to can salsa, this is a great place to start.

The ingredients are as follows: 1 yellow onion, 1 red onion, 1 white onion, 6 pounds of tomatoes, 2 banana peppers, and 3 green bell peppers. Chop and combine in a pot with three 6 ounce cans of tomato paste, 1/2 cup white vinegar, 2 tablespoons of garlic powder, 1 1/2 tablespoons of salt, 1 tablespoon of cayenne pepper, 1 1/2 tablespoons of cumin, 1/4 cup brown sugar, and 1/4 cup white sugar.

While this recipe isn’t necessarily a true version of Texas salsa, it does cover the basics of canning, like removing air bubbles, that are important to securing your salsa safely.

To make this salsa uniquely Texan, ditch the banana peppers and green bell peppers in favor of jalapeños to taste. In addition, the cumin and cayenne pepper can be nixed in favor of garlic and cilantro, each diced thin and cooked down.
