New Bergstrom Expressway Will Be Non-Stop Route to Austin Airport
The Bergstrom Expressway project will begin this week and will offer Leander residents a non-stop drive to the Austin airport.
As KXAN reported, the road project will cost $743 million and will be a new toll road on Highway 183 from U.S. 290 East to State Highway 71. Of the 12 planned lanes, half will be tolled.
The Executve Director of the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority, Mike Heiligenstein told KXAN that the authority is “looking for a huge benefit, roughly triple or quadruple the capacity of 183 as it is today. The economical benefits are going to be tremendous for East Austin and that part of the corridor.”
The toll for the planned project will be under $3, and will also have at least seven miles of cyclist and pedestrian paths. The road was paid for through both “private investors and grant funds.”
The first part of construction is expected to be completed by 2019 and the final section is planned for 2020. The video below was released by the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority and gives a virtual look at the planned road.
