Adopt-a-Beach Brings 1,000 Volunteers to South Padre Beaches

No one wants to spend their vacation time on beaches littered with trash. Luckily, over 1,000 volunteers armed with trash bags, hats, and sunglasses showed up at South Padre Island on Saturday morning to clean up the beaches and restore their natural beauty as part of the Adopt-A-Beach initiative.

Not only did these volunteers pick up trash from humans, they also encountered nature’s “leftovers” as well. Volunteer Layla Prado told CBS 4 Valley Central, “It’s really dirty. It’s really dirty, but there’s a lot of … you see a lot of dead fish and a lot of dead eels. They’re really big also.”

For the past 25 years, Adopt-A-Beach’s efforts have taken place at 30 sites across the coast of Texas. Over 8,000 tons of trash have been removed by 400,000 volunteers. But Adopt-A-Beach Coordinator Joe Vega stresses that people can make a difference anytime they visit the Texas coast. He told the news that people should pack a trash bag with them and once they’ve finished their picnics or are leaving to go home, they can just pick up their trash and toss it away in one of the trash cans available at the beach. Little actions like that can make a huge difference when everyone does their part.
