In 2013, the Texas Legislature passed a bill that named the last Friday in September as American Indian Heritage Day. This Friday, the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum in Austin in partnership with the Great Promise for the American Indians will hold a celebration.

Folks are invited to come out to the museum to join in the festivities which will include dancing and drumming performances, interactive activities for school children, and morning and evening programs that celebrate the traditional and contemporary performing arts of Texas’s American Indians.

Hands-on activities will include clothing decoration, storytelling, food preparation, and art creation for museum visitors and students, alike. Dancing and drumming performances will begin at 10 a.m. and last until 12:15 p.m. Then a free public performance is scheduled for Friday evening that will include dancing and drumming performances celebrating the traditional Texas American Indian as well as that of the modern American Indians of Texas.

School groups (including those who are homeschooled) should make reservations to receive discounts. Amerian Indians contributed much to the history and lore of the great Lone Star State. Take a few minutes out of your day tomorrow and grab the kids. Check out yet another unique facet of that thing that makes the Texas Hill Country so special.
