Houston Apartment Blaze Closes Museum District
KHOU reported on Tuesday that a two-alarm fire at the Hampstead Apartments, located at 1508 Blodgett near Crawford, began with a single car. The inflamed vehicle set off a chain reaction in which other cars caught fire and engulfed the apartment building and surrounding area in smoke.
This luxury apartment building is located in Houston’s popular Museum District where the Houston Fire Department arrived around 2:30 in the afternoon. Firefighters responding at the scene told Click2Houston that one man was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation, and 100 others residents were directly impacted by damage from the fire. Forty-five apartments were affected.
Many pets had to be evacuated and saved, and firefighters also stepped in to retrieve three people off of their balconies where they took refuge when the smoke inside the building became too much to escape from safely.
Due to the Houston Fire Department’s quick work, the fire was deemed under control by 3:10 p.m. KPRC 2 posted this video to their Facebook page that shows what the firefighters were up against.
The Houston Police Department’s Arson Division will continue to look into the cause of the fire to see if the cause was ill intent or if it was just a freak accident.
