The Austin, Texas rock-throwers are still at large. The Austin Police Department (APD) is issuing new warnings after nearly 60 drivers have been hit by rocks on Interstate 35. Some with minor car damage and others with very serious injuries.

Initally, police thought that the perpetrators were throwing rocks from overpasses, but now they believe they are throwing them from cars passing on the opposite side of the highway. The many incidences cover several miles, making it difficult for police to handle the case

As reported by KXAN, Assistant Police Chief Chris McIlvain issued sound advice for drivers who travel along I-35: “What I would do is drive on the outside lanes,” he said. “If a rock was coming over you have a little bit further distance, and then the accuracy might be off.”

The APD is also asking: if your car is hit, please pull over where you are, and call 9-1-1, so that they have a better chance of tracking down the culprit.

McIlvain feels that they have been lucky thus far that no deaths have occurred, but if the rock-throwers are not caught, drivers remain in danger.

The APD, Texas Department of Transportation and the Austin transportation department were set to meet on Feb. 9 to come up with a plan to keep residents safe. The design of the interstate itself will likely to be a hot topic.
