Austin’s Hoffbrau Steakhouse Expanding with ‘Rustic Tap’ Next Month

By  |

One of Austin’s longest-running steakhouses, the Original Hoffbrau Steakhouse, has made public their intentions to expand with the grand opening of Rustic Tap as early as next month.

The new West Sixth venue is currently being retrofitted with new plumbing and interior modifications as the late-night stop looks to attract patrons with promises of live music, an enclosed patio, and 24 local beers on tap. “We really want to emphasize the local Austin community,” a spokesman for the group recently told Eater Austin.

The Original Hoffbrau Steakhouse will provide “tenderloin tidbits” and other appropriate pub food for Rustic Tap’s menu.

The new expansion is just the latest change for the restaurant, whose ownership has been known to resist change over the years. The Depression-era steakhouse did not have a full bar until last year, or even air conditioning until the 1990s.

The steakhouse is famous for becoming one of the first restaurants to serve draft beer for a nickel a piece, after its owners — two former ice wagon drivers named Robert and Tom Hamby — decided it was high time to leave the Prohibition era in the dust.

If the family-owned business maintains its values and love of local flavors, there’s no reason Rustic Tap won’t ensure many more generations of Hill Country families good laughs and good eats.

Be on the lookout for the doors to open on 613 W. 6th around Feb. 5.
