By  |

The Texas Hill Country is a region of abundant beauty, great (not to mention safe) campgrounds, pristine nature preserves, peaceful state parks, and even some private ranches that are perfect for doing some day packing or backpack hiking.

Explore the territory while enjoying the truly awe-inspiring scenery (plus hikers know, you’ll benefit from an inadvertent low-impact workout). Here are some of the top picks for areas in the Hill Country that allow for great day packing or long-term backpacking hikes. And be sure you know how to dress for each hike, as well!

Encompassing 463 acres, the Purgatory Natural Area includes miles of hiking trails that the San Marcos Greenbelt Alliance constructed, which are fantastic for backpacking, bird watching, and getting out into nature. The area is environmentally sensitive, so it’s a requirement that you remain on the trails, however, you won’t feel constrained considering the preserve includes so many natural species of plants and animals, beautiful bluffs, and gorgeous meadows. It really is a sight for sore eyes.

Situated in the Sabinal River Canyon, this park consists of 2,174 acres whose namesake foliage is a tremendous canopy in the hot sun, and a must-see in the fall when its species of Uvalde bigtooth maple trees turns beautiful shades of fall colors. The backpacking opportunities are plentiful, as are the photo opportunities, so don’t forget to pack your camera.
