Bandera, Texas has made True West Magazine’s top-10 list of True Western Towns of 2018. Is it any surprise? But, with such company as Tombstone, Arizona, Sheridan and Laramie, Wyoming, and Dodge City, Kansas, one can tell this list means business.

Described as a magazine that “…captures the history of the American frontier through authentic literary nonfiction and heritage travel narratives in the spirit of the Wild West…” True West Magazine can, therefore, be considered to be somewhat of an expert on the subject matter. After all, a listing of “True Western Towns” rather fits nicely into their wheelhouse. That being said, they do their utmost to ensure this listing is comprehensive. Other such notables include Buffalo, Wyoming, Abilene, Kansas, and Fort Smith, Arkansas.

They go on to preface their list by noting that each town’s preservation efforts demonstrate a spirit of renewal while holding onto the images of the past. They note that it’s visible at “…beautifully renovated Victorian mansions and railroad depots, at important battle sites and brand new museums, at restored downtowns and historic ranches.” The work of these vestiges of western folklore and pride keeps the story of our past alive and makes for excellent tourist destinations for those with a hankering to visit.

Their description of Bandera is spot-on. They describe it by saying that the “…Cowboy Capital of the World boasts several historic guest ranches…” and that one can “…Explore the picturesque countryside on horseback at Dixie Dude Ranch, in business 78 years.” The magazine further goes on to describe the many great events and activities that make Bandera what it is to those of us who are familiar with it in the Texas Hill Country. And, they invite readers to visit a YouTube link (provided here) to hear Texas Rebellion sing “Ghost of Bandera,” referring to the song as being “…as beautiful as the Texas Hill Country.” If you want to visit Texas and you’re looking for a town with a true western feel, Bandera is one for the record books – but don’t just take our word for it!
