Bank Restores Stolen Money to Oldest WWII Veteran’s Personal Account

The personal bank account of Richard Overton has recently been credited by the Bank of America after having been defrauded as a result of identity theft. Overton, a long-time Texas Hill Country resident living in Austin, had his Social Security number stolen and bank account compromised, leaving his personal account depleted. The 112-year-old man’s family reported the incident to local authorities last week. Thankfully, this money was kept separate from an online fundraising campaign to allow Richard independent living together with 24-hour, in-home care.

Seven withdrawals were identified to have been made from the personal account over the course of the theft, which took place over a number of months. A police report was filed as soon as this was realized. Richard’s cousin Volma Overton stated that the family was shocked when the Bank of America requested that they come in and sign for having the funds restored into Richard’s account. He didn’t reveal how much money comprised the theft, but did note that it was a “significant amount.”

“Man, I teared up. I couldn’t believe it. They made it happen. The executive of the company said he’d take care of this, and he took care of it,” Volma Overton told nbcdfw.com. Bank of America spokeswoman, Colleen Haggerty, stated that the bank is in the process of investigating the theft and Richard’s family has also noted that a parallel investigation is being completed by federal authorities together with the Austin police department. “Everyone wants to get to the bottom of this. I don’t think it’s going to be long before we know,” Volma Overton noted. Richard Overton is a valued member of his community and the state. He has been the subject of a small documentary, countless interviews, and several milestone birthday parties. He was present following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and is recognized as America’s oldest World War II veteran.
