The SA Current writes that the 127th annual Battle of Flowers Parade will have an earlier start time of 10 a.m. next year during Fiesta San Antonio 2018, and in true San Antonio fashion, it’s already time to start looking forward to next year’s festivities. Recently, it was announced that the grand marshal(s) for the 2018 event will be the highly regarded Familia Cortez.

The Cortezes are known throughout the city for their iconic restaurant Mi Tierra, an amazing, colorful bakery and cafe that’s been around for 75 years. According to their website, Mi Tierra opened in 1941 with only three tables and a small space inside El Mercado that Pedro Cortez bought for only $150. Now, tourists and locals love to visit the expanded restaurant and chow down on enchiladas, pick up some pan dulce to go, and listen to the mariachis.

“As the Tricentennial Commission highlights the documented history of our city, this year’s parade theme is ‘300 Timeless Treasures,’” KSAT quotes parade chairman Nel Belt. “The parade will bring to life fond memories, monumental milestones, magical moments, and hopeful vision — the heart and the spirit of our legendary city.” Battle of Flowers Association president Rhonda Calvert stated that the Familia Cortez is the perfect grand marshals to lead the parade since they are so embedded in San Antonio’s culture.
