Retiring a beloved college mascot is always a difficult and downright emotional thing to do. The University of Texas at Austin’s long-lived mascot Bevo XIV – “Sunrise Studly” – was recently diagnosed with bovine leukemia and was retired after the Longhorns’ victory in the AT&T Red River Showdown against the University of Oklahoma.

Upon his cancer diagnosis, the University was extremely saddened, but wasted no time in searching for the perfect Bevo XV to carry the torch. The Silver Spurs Alumni Association is in charge of finding Bevo’s replacement, and the search will focus on finding the same majestic qualities as previous longhorns. No timelines have been established as of yet, but the University expects that Bevo XV will make an appearance on the sidelines for the 2016 season, including Thanksgiving, the 100th anniversary of Bevo’s first appearance at a Texas Football game.
