The surest sign that the State Fair of Texas is about to kick off is the returning of Big Tex to his Fair Park post. On Friday, September 21, such was the case, as onlookers watched. Fox News recorded the video to post to their Facebook page, if you have some time to take a peek. The segment is 41 minutes in length, because it takes a little elbow grease and some precision to get the tallest cowboy in the world standing up straight.

As the State Fair of Texas’ official mascot, Big Tex is familiar to many a Texan and tourist alike. He’s been found as the backdrop of a number of fair-goer’s photos, and he’s a positive symbol that fall time in Texas is indeed here. As such, he was placed on his perch next to the Cotton Bowl Stadium at approximately 10 a.m. during the season’s equinox – September 21 – transitioning from summer to autumn.

Clad in his traditional garb of Dickies clothing with a matching pair of Lucchese cowboy boots, Big Tex is now into his sixth decade of greeting those who attend the fair. This new version of the icon is only five years in age, however. Fans of the State Fair of Texas will sadly recall the day original Big Tex went up in flames, necessitating a replacement. Subsequently, this second incarnation has been the stand-in for five years. He’s just a big Texas toddler! This year the State Fair of Texas begins on September 28 and will run through to October 21.
