Here in Texas, we have a state animal, a state flower, and yes, we do have a state food. But as of yet, we don’t have a state breakfast item, and Texas representative Stephanie Klick wants the breakfast taco to fill that void.
On March 7, 2019, the lawmaker from Fort Worth filed HCR 123 – a resolution to have breakfast tacos become the official breakfast item of Texas. “Texas is renowned for its distinctive and delicious foods, and our state has put its brand on breakfast with a versatile item that is beloved from the Panhandle to the Rio Grande: the breakfast taco,” Klick wrote in the document.

According to the Austin American-Statesman, Texas has a variety of foods which have been designated as official representatives of Texas. These include chili con carne, tortilla chips and salsa, and peach cobbler. However, the lack of a breakfast item was apparent to Klick, who said, “Many Texans have fond memories, dating back decades, of being served tacos for breakfast by their mothers and grandmothers in San Antonio, South Texas, and the Rio Grande Valley,” the resolution reads.

This same resolution was filed by Klick in the final legislative session of 2017. However, it didn’t make it out of committee. This latest filing comes on the heels of a resolution introduced last month that would make all tacos (any kind), the official state food of Texas. Klick’s resolution reads in part: “WHEREAS, No matter where or when it got its start, the breakfast taco has quickly become popular with both native Texans and delighted visitors from across the nation; as long as it includes a tortilla and is eaten for breakfast, the breakfast taco can range from the simplest (tortilla and egg) to the traditional (tortilla and machacado con huevo) to the innovative (tortilla, eggs, and hot dogs) to the most extravagant (tortilla plus whatever else is on the menu), and it can be enjoyed in every corner of the state.”
