The Briscoe-Garner Museum in Uvalde, Texas connects the community with both local, state, and national history and developments in a very meaningful way. Undergoing a major renovation in 2013, the museum reopened to the public with newly installed exhibits, a new second-floor feature, and displays telling the story of these two local Texas Hill Country figures.

The $1.1 million renovation of what was the old Garner Museum actually began in January 2009. The majority of that project was designed to improve the building’s structure, including foundation work and asbestos abatement. Regularly posting updates on its Facebook page, the museum maintained its plans to become the most effective and reliable local resource in their subject matter, keeping future visitors apprised as they progressed.

Vice President John Nance “Cactus Jack” Garner resided in that very building on North Park Street for over 30 years. The museum itself first opened to the public in 1973 and focused its exhibits on his life and career. When the renovation project commenced, its plan was to open the second floor to the public, featuring displays and exhibits also related to Governor Dolph Briscoe – hence the renaming of the facility to the Briscoe-Garner Museum.
