Texas Woman Now Has British Accent After Surgery

By  |

Lisa Alamia was born and raised in Rosenburg, Texas, but you wouldn’t know it from her British accent. After having jaw surgery six months ago, Alamia developed what doctors are calling Foreign Accent Syndrome.

Less than 100 people in the past 100 years have been diagnosed with this syndrome. Alamia laughs as she explains how confusing her new accent can be. She now says words very differently, like “kitten” instead of “kidding.”

Alamia is worried about being judged or accused of lying. At first, even her doctor was skeptical, but after MRIs and running through numerous tongue-twisters that would mix up any actor, the diagnosis become clearer. She will now have to go though speech therapy to sound “normal” again.

Despite the worry and work ahead, Alamia and her children were seen smiling on KHOU and making the best of a strange situation.
