The little city of Bee Cave boasts some of the richest history in the Texas Hill Country. Located 14 miles west of Austin in west central Travis County, Bee Cave wasn’t incorporated till 1987. However, the town’s historic roots run quite deep.

Dietrich Bohls settled the area back in the early 1850s. Bohls moved from Austin to the confluence of Barton Creek and Little Barton Creek. At the time, Austin had a population of 900 and Bohls wanted to escape the big city.

In the process of finding a quiet place to raise his family, Bohls ended up founding Bee Cave. The town got its name from a large cave around which Mexican honeybees swarmed.  The bees lived on the creek banks and buzzed all around Western Travis County.

Come to Bee Cave and see what the buzz is all about! The town offers plenty of fun activities and cool locations. Check out Hamilton Pool Preserve, a historic swimming hole. Hamilton Creek pours over a limestone outcropping and creates a 50 foot waterfall plunging into a steep box canyon. Swimming is an honored tradition in the beautiful grotto.

The preserve is also home to the Golden-Cheeked Warbler—making it a perfect location for bird watching. Hiking trails, picnic areas, and restrooms are available. Tourists are advised to call Travis County Parks at 512-264-2740 before visiting.
