What do you get when you mix art, music, pop culture, and felines all under the same roof? You get POP Cats, a convention for fans of everything cat. For two days, the Palmer Events Center in Austin will morph into a meowing and vibrant world of cats. At POP Cats, you’ll see art dedicated to the furriest of house pets and get a chance to meet famous cats, as well as some famous two-legged cat enthusiasts.

A Brief ‘Hiss-tory’ of POP Cats

POP Cats began in 2017 and was held in Miami. It’s the brainchild of siblings Edgar Alexander and Johana Flores. POP Cats was founded to “raise awareness of feline welfare and celebrate these popular pets through an experience that offers both entertainment and advocacy.” The inaugural POP Cats convention was such a fur-flying success that 2018’s convention was planned almost immediately. Austin was chosen based on its animal-loving reputation, as well as its creative culture.

POP Cats will be held August 25 and 26. Convention hours are from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Saturday and from 12 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Sunday. At the convention, there will be adoptable cats from the Austin Humane Society on site to for you to snuggle. And get this: You can even bring your own cat, where he can enjoy specially-designed kitty play areas, where these social felines can romp and play! (Go here to pre-register, as unregistered cats will be turned away at the door). Oh, and no dogs allowed at this cats-only event, so find a sitter for Fido that weekend.

Celebrity Meet and Greets and ‘Catoos’!

In addition to celebrity meet and greets and talks on everything from the history of cats on the internet to the importance of microchipping your pets, there is truly something for every cat lover at this convention. Also, if you’ve been thinking about getting a tattoo to celebrate your favorite kitty, visit Austin tattoo artist Betty Rose and get a “catoo” to show off to your friends (and your disinterested cats at home).

A portion of the ticket sales to POP Cats goes directly to animal non-profits. To learn more about POP Cats and to purchase tickets, visit their website or follow them on Facebook.
