Your Summer Soundtrack is ‘Catching Fire’ From the Josh Abbott Band

Following the release of some very Tex-centric music, the Josh Abbott Band went front-and-center in an effort to grow its fanbase nationally. Formed in Lubbock in 2006, the group has consisted of various members in its 13-year lifespan, but its namesake frontman remains true, working with his bandmates to produce a sound that reflects the life and times of its followers. With respect to their sound, their future, and their latest new release, Abbott recently said, “We have a whole new refocused attitude on what we’re gonna do now moving forward.” He defines their upcoming EP, entitled “Catching Fire,” as a reflection of what happened over the last year-and-a-half of his life.

With the release of “Front Row Seat,” in 2015, followed by “Until My Voice Goes Out,” in 2017, the Josh Abbott Band has chronicled the ups and downs of love and life from a Lone Star State perspective, if not a very personal one. Staying relevant has always been first-and-foremost for the band members, wanting to make music which not only reflects their passions and interests but is also essential to its fans experiencing the music from their own perspectives.

Along they way, they’ve experimented with varying sounds, using the same great foundation. With “Until My Voice Goes Out,” Abbott had wanted a full orchestra, but he was convinced to instead incorporate some selective string and horn players for an equally effective yet subtle accent. Following that, the same players went on tour with the band, ensuring their new music, as well as some older favorites, received the same perceptive overlay of sound, drawing the type of emotion they had been wanting to evoke from the crowds.

The band’s new single, “Little More You,” from the forthcoming “Catching Fire” EP, is available now for streaming and purchase. Having faced some personal growing pains in a very public way over the recent years of their career, the Josh Abbott Band hasn’t shielded its fans from some of life’s uncomfortable details, often incorporating them into their very heartfelt songs. This latest release and the upcoming project it stems from is intended to measure up, if not surpass, prior charting successes. The tone and quality of this piece also differs from past singles, as well as 90 percent of what you typically hear over the airwaves. In a press release on the upcoming four-track EP, the band says their songs speak of “…positivity, built on solid country textures and unified by Abbott’s congenial-but-experienced voice.”
