While a little girl walked along the beach in Florida, she saw a seagull drop what she assumed was a Cheeto from its mouth. Out of curiosity, she looked closer and discovered that the gull had been holding a seahorse. Thinking quickly, she put the injured seahorse in her beach bucket along with water and her parents contacted the Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA).

“The chances of surviving being dropped by a seagull in the sand are small,” marine biologist Don Stansell told The Dodo. “It’s amazing because all of the things happened at the exact right time and probably only in a two-minute window for her to have survived.”

The seahorse was taken in to CMA where it adapted to its new surroundings in a quarantined tank and changed from Cheeto-orange to sunset yellow. The small creature was carefully fed shrimp with a pair of tweezers, and over time, it gained enough strength to be returned to the water.

Joined by a camera crew, the official CMA boat took the seahorse into an area full of seagrass in calm waters and let the creature once mistaken for a corn chip go. It’s now back at home where it belongs with a second chance at life.
