Did you know Chevy’s iconic Suburban received its very own Hollywood star in 2019? That’s right, the full-size SUV has played a starring role in over 1,750 films and TV series since its 1952 debut performance. So I felt very privileged last week to drive a 2021 Chevrolet Suburban High Country 4WD. After all, it’s not every week I get to drive around with a bona fide Hollywood celebrity!

I was slightly embarrassed, though, to be driving solo most of the time. The Suburban is massive; as the largest full-size SUV on the market, it can easily carry nine passengers. Sadly, in the age of Covid quarantining and restrictions, none of my friends or family members are available to ride along. I did talk my husband into riding shotgun, although he really wanted to be behind the wheel.

Chevrolet has redesigned their 2021 Suburban to offer the most interior space of any full-size SUV. Even its third-row passengers now have plenty of legroom, and there is 19% more cargo space than previous versions.

My test vehicle, the Chevrolet Suburban High Country 4WD, is the top trim level for the brand. It features a unique trim, plus a bronze-accented grille and 22-inch wheels. It operates on a 6.2 liter V-8 engine with a 10-speed automatic transmission. Magnetic Ride Control is a standard suspension feature on the High Country that produces a smoother ride on any terrain. Fuel economy for the 2021 Suburban 4WD High Country was estimated at 14 mpg in town and 19 mpg on the highway, for an average of 16 mpg.

Safety and Technology Features

Standard safety features for the Chevrolet Suburban included HD rear-vision camera, forward collision alert, front pedestrian detection, and both front and rear-park assist. Lane keep assist with lane departure warning, rear cross traffic alert, and following distance indicator are also featured, along with automatic high beams.

While the MSRP for a 2021 Chevrolet Suburban is $75,300, the manufacturer added several optional packages to the test model, bringing the total price to $84,545. The High Country Deluxe package ($5,605) added a power panoramic sunroof with power sunshade. Adaptive cruise control, enhanced automatic emergency braking, and power/retractable assist steps with lighting were included. An advanced trailering system and air ride adaptive suspension were also featured.

Rear Seat Entertainment

A rear seat media system ($1,995) that includes dual rear seat mounted 12.8” diagonal color touch LCD HD screens was also added. Making me wish once more that we had some grandkids (or even the neighbor’s kids) along for a ride. These screens can be seen from both the second and third row passengers, popcorn not included.

Suburban High Country drivers have more technology and controls than ever before, including multiple screens to command from the captain’s chair. There’s a 10” screen for the center console, plus an 8 inch color display in the gauge cluster. There’s also a 15” head up display, a feature I’ve learned to love adn rely on a lot since it keeps my eyes where they should be for safe driving.

A 10-speaker Bose audio system, Chevrolet Infotainment 3 with navigation, and wireless charging for devices are all featured. My all-time favorite security blanket, Onstar, is also featured on the Suburban (and all GM products). It’s hard to get lost with Onstar onboard!
