A Tiny Christmas Tree Was Placed in Front of the Alamo
Last month, the San Antonio Current wrote that the city’s huge Christmas tree would no longer reside in front of the Alamo through the holiday season. Instead, officials opted to move it to Travis Park. Though it’s only about a 6-minute walk from its original location, the changing of a 33-year-old tradition didn’t sit right with many residents.
This past weekend, an 18-inch miniature Christmas tree was placed where the 55-foot tree once stood. MySA.com spoke with the man who sat the tiny tree in front of the Alamo. “It was a cold space,” Steve Monreal said after he walked by the empty spot. “I thought, ‘Man, I’m going to go get a little tree and put it in front of the Alamo.’ I just put it there to make a statement — it doesn’t matter how big of a tree, people are going to stop because that’s what they’ve been doing for 20 or 30 years.”
Monreal also placed mini-trees at the San Fernando Cathedral, La Villita, and Hemisfair Park, which are all places that he feels the ceremony should have been moved to instead of the controversial area in Travis Park where a Confederate monument once stood.
Monreal’s tree has already been removed from the Alamo, but thankfully, H-E-B says they will place an 18-foot decorated tree in its place to keep the magic of the holidays at the Alamo.
