Exciting Civil Improvements for Galveston’s Seawall Boulevard Begin

The city has broken ground on an improvement project for Galveston’s Seawall Blvd. in hopes to enhance the beach experience for residents and visitors.

The groundbreaking ceremony took place on Seawall Boulevard in a symbolic gesture from the Texas Department of Transportation, the Park Board of Trustees, and the Goodman Corp., the three driving forces behind these changes as the Houston Chronicle reported.

The city will “install new bathrooms, bus shelters, identifying signage, bike racks, new lighting, and benches…it’s a beautification project. It’s a good example of a project that is not only good for tourists, which is important, but it’s good for the people that live here.”

The hope is that these improvements will transform Seawall Boulevard into a more pedestrian-friendly street and will continue to ramp up tourism to Galveston. About 33 new benches will be installed, 29 new bus stops will be added, and five fully functional toilets will be installed to help the beach-going crowd.

The new bus line will “eventually work in conjunction with the city’s rail trolley, which is scheduled to return to the island in 2017.” The plan is previously improved with over $6.3 million in federal grants, and $1 million in a grant from the Frito-Lay corporation.
