Kevin Sumlin, Texas A&M University football coach has full support from university President Michael Young. In a Texas Tribune interview on December 1, Young identified his full support for the coach, without going as far as promising he would return in 2017 to coach the Aggies.

After a disappointing football season closed, some Aggies fans called for the firing of Sumlin after a string of losses late in the season that crippled the team’s ranking. The school’s president, however, made note of the fact that Sumlin has coached the team through the difficult transition to the Southeastern Conference from the Big 12, saying, “He has had by far the best record of any coach who has moved a team from a less-challenging conference to a more-challenging conference.”

In his first 5 seasons at Texas A&M, Sumlin coached the team to bowl eligibility each year. Although this didn’t break a bowl drought, Young noted, “…there is an enormously strong positive movement on that football program that you really have to be conscious of…” Young is persistent in his support of Sumlin despite a three-year streak of late-season losses, but whether he returns to coach the 2017 football season with the Aggies remains to be seen.
