The 2019 Texas Cavaliers River Parade has named legendary rodeo clown and “man in the can” Leon Coffee as its honorary grand marshal. The fan favorite on the rodeo scene for some 45 years now is a Pro Rodeo Hall of Famer and a fan favorite at the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo.

Coffee’s appointment was announced on Tuesday, December 11, in a press conference at Morgan’s Wonderland – the first fully accessible, family fun park in the world – which has been named the 2019 parade’s charity. This year’s theme for the event is “It’s Showtime in San Antonio.”

Coffee began getting the rodeo bug as a child. Following a few years of bull riding, at a high school rodeo, he was asked to sit in on distracting the animals long enough for riders to get to safety. From then on, he explained that he became obsessed with it. “I’m an adrenaline junkie. This is as big an adrenaline rush as you can get. You’ve got 1,800 pounds of beast with baseball bats sticking out of the side of his head and he wants to take you off the face of this earth,” he explained to houstonchronicle.com. And for more than four decades he’s been a barrel man, or professional rodeo clown. Wearing outlandish outfits and face paint, giving comic relief when needed, and witnessing some amazing rodeo action, Coffee has made history in the sport.
