A biography of the Queen of Tejano music, better known as Selena Quintanilla, was released in 1996 by author Joe Nick Patoski. In the process of researching the topic, Patoski enlisted the assistance of Richard Zelade, who successfully helped ensure its factual accuracy. Many fans know Selena by simply her first name, something that generally occurs when stars reach a truly epic status, as she did. But few knew the tiny details of her life that helped form the celebrity they had come to admire and love. One of these details was Selena’s hometown, the community in Texas where she was born.

Lake Jackson is located in Brazoria County, Texas. As of the most current census, its population sits at just under 27K. At the time when Selena was born (1971), it would have been considerably smaller and was long known as a close-knit community. It got its humble beginnings in 1942, when a portion of Lake Jackson was developed for workers of the Dow Chemical Company. 5K acres on what was once the Abner Jackson Plantation became its foundation.

Reminiscences of Selena and her family’s home, work, and school life were shared by friends, neighbors, and co-workers from Lake Jackson, producing details that only served to completely solidify her as an icon to her already avid fanbase. Selena’s hometown proved a treasure trove of infomation about the singer’s life.
