YouTuber Mark Rober is known for his engineering skills. He once worked for NASA on the Curiosity Rover, and now, he’s putting his talents to use for fun and practical devices here on Earth.

In a video he uploaded last week, Rober customized his car horn to do more than just blare one loud tone. He set up three extra buttons into his console that allows him to give varying levels of honks. He still has his standard “Yikes! Don’t hit me!” sound, but now he can also use a double high-pitched toot as a nudge to say “Hey, the light is green.” It doesn’t sound as aggressive as a normal honk, and it seems to really make a difference on the road. The response from drivers who hear it is much more courteous since the sound itself is so much nicer.

The second custom horn sound is the most benign of them all. In fact, it can put a smile on someone’s face. As a “Hello” or a “Heads up,” Rober installed R2D2’s signature chirping sound. And as the final custom sound, Rober went for something he’ll rarely use as a joke – the dreaded train noise!

See the “courtesy honk” in action in the video below.
