Driving from San Antonio to Dallas last July, police officers of the SAPD covered for their Dallas brothers and sisters that were attending funerals in the wake of the downtown ambush that took place. This year, in return for the favor, roughly 20 Dallas police officers are lending their support by patrolling San Antonio in SAPD cars, wearing their Dallas uniforms.
As the SAPD prepares to bury one of its fallen this Friday in the Texas Hill Country, Dallas officers have been preparing for the bus ride and the exchange of duties to assist this department as it says goodbye to Officer Miguel I. Moreno. Officer Moreno was killed in the line of duty while responding to a report of a suspicious person. His partner was also wounded in the ensuing gunfire, and the gunman was killed.

In an interview with The Dallas Morning News, first vice president of the Dallas Police Association, Frederick Frazier, said, “We wanted to repay them for what they did for us.” The Dallas officers truly appreciated the helping hand that the SAPD provided for their department while it was in the process of grieving its losses in 2016, and feel that it’s only right to return that gesture. With respect to Moreno’s slaying, Frazier noted, “It’s just disturbing that this is the direction that our society has gone.”

Responding to calls as they would in Dallas, the DPD officers will do so in their own uniforms, and in a similar pay-it-forward fashion, the Dallas Police Association will be donating $2,500 to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation to assist the family of the New York police officer, Miosotis Familia, who was recently killed in an ambush on Wednesday, July 5, as she sat in her mobile command post. Their assistance will lead to housing support for the officer’s family, which was the same helping hand the foundation extended to the families of DART and Dallas police officers who were slain last year.
