Texas News Anchor Breaks Guinness World Record
On Monday afternoon, Houston news anchor Dave Ward had a pleasant surprise waiting for him at work. It was a certificate from the Guinness World Records telling him he had become the record-holder for the longest career as a news broadcaster on TV! The certificate says: “The longest career as a television news broadcaster is 49 years and 218 days, achieved by Dave Ward (USA), who began working on 9 November 1966 and continues anchoring at KTRK-TV, in Houston, Texas, USA, as verified on 2 June 2016″.
Ward wrote on his Facebook wall that he felt honored and that he “owe[s] it all to the viewers in southeast Texas who have allowed me into their homes each evening to deliver the news. Without the viewers, I would have been gone long ago.” Ward began working for Channel 13 at age 27 as a street reporter. Once he moved to the news desk a couple of years later, “Good evening, friends” became his daily greeting. He is now 77 years old.
To be completely clear, Ward became the world record holder over two years ago, but the title hadn’t officially been handed over to him yet. The former record holder, Hal Fishman, worked as a Los Angeles news anchor from 1960 to 2007.
