Partnering with the Koch brothers, retired football star Deion Sanders is helping to fight poverty in Texas. This unique partnership was announced on Saturday, June 24, and will raise $21 million over the course of the next three years to go towards anti-poverty programs in Dallas, Texas. The new venture, called Prime 5, held a weekend conference in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where Sanders joined Koch donors to help raise money.

Sanders also defended Charles Koch, as someone “trying to make the world a better place.” In a feature story by NBC DFW, he explained, “I’m happy where I am and who I’m with because we share a lot of the same values and goals.”

The partnership between the Koch brothers and Sanders will specifically help fund Dallas-based organizations which address such issues as chronic addiction, education failure, joblessness, personal debt, and family breakdowns. Evan Feinberg, who leads Stand Together, a Koch-backed organization, noted, “We don’t think top-down solutions work for these problems.”

In the meantime, Sanders intends not to have his efforts to strengthen poor communities marred by politics with this partnership, saying, “I’ve been criticized since I was 16 years old. This ain’t new to me. I’ve been booed simultaneously by 90,000 (people) that sung my name like a quartet. I could care less.” The former football and baseball player, who was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2011, has been an advocate for charitable causes and assisting communities has been his longtime legacy.
