“Climb Enchanted Rock,” they said. “It will be easy,” they said. This may be true for the burly gentlemen who climbed the rock at a lightening speed in front of me or the runner doing his laps up and down the mountain. For the average explorer like myself, well-planned photo taking opportunities were my saving grace to reach the summit.
The drive to the Enchanted Rock led through the little town of Llano, Texas. With its old tim nostalgia enveloping me as I drove through the town, I knew I would be in for a real treat once I reached the rock.

Arriving at the Enchanted Rock was a bit of a learning experience. I quickly learned what cattle guards are. Once in the actual park payment station, I was greeted with signs warning of rattlesnakes. A park ranger quickly let me know to just, “Walk around them. They may be out getting some sun.” I quickly resolved that I had not driven this far to not climb the rock.
The trails leading up to the rock are well maintained. Once at the base of the rock, it is a bit rugged. Although the climb is steep, it is doable. There is not a trail leading up to the top – per se. But, one benefit is it is actual rock or granite. Slipping on loose gravel or a sandy trail is not really a factor.
The summit is simply breathtaking. You are able to see hills for as far as the eye can see. Albeit a bit windy, it is well worth the effort to see this mystical view. Sit. Stay awhile. Enjoy what is.
Dig your heels in and lean back. As steep of a climb as it was to get up the rock, is just as steep of a descent down the rock. Try taking a different side of the rock down. Explore the different natural rock formations, random pockets of greenery and dried up creek trails.
Should you choose to take on the Enchanted Rock, you will not be disappointed. Easy to climb? Maybe not. Easy on the eyes? Cha-Ching! Happy exploring!
